Dale Rogers Training Center (DRTC), a nonprofit based in Oklahoma City that provides training and employment for people with disabilities, will serve as the host site of a new chapter of Civitan International.

civitan-internationalCivitan International, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities.

DRTC Executive Director Connie Thrash McGoodwin, M.Ed., who was the first woman elected as governor of the Oklahoma/Kansas district of Civitan International, is glad the club is returning to Oklahoma City.

“When Frank Kelley (Governor of the Heartland Civitan District) first reached out to me, I felt that helping start a new club concept that welcomes people with disabilities met a need in the community.” Thrash McGoodwin said.

People with and without disabilities can take part in club activities, which could range from collecting items for food pantries or homeless shelters, to volunteering at area retirement homes and beyond. Civitan is looking for energetic leaders who want to give back to their communities and have fun doing it.

Civitan International is celebrating its 100th year in 2017 with a goal to charter 100 new clubs. Membership is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and of good character. Officer positions are available with the new club. Only $25 initiation fee and annual dues apply.

You’re invited to the first Civitan International meeting in OKC, set to charter in March 2017.
